Speaker Mark Smith


Mark Smith is a Partner with BDC Capital’s Industrial Innovation Venture Fund. Mark brings to the team nearly two decades of operating and investing experience across enterprise and consumer products and technologies.
Before joining BDC Capital, Mark led business development for Amazon Web Services' (AWS) startup segment in Canada, where he worked with top accelerators and venture capital funds to support the growth of high potential startups. Prior to AWS, Mark spent nearly 10 years in venture investing with SDTC, the MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, and, most recently, as a Director with the RBC Corporate Venture Capital Group. In that time, Mark was involved in the deployment of more than $100 million in capital in both direct and third-party fund investments. Industries covered included enterprise software, cleantech/climatetech, fintech, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, mobility and consumer internet. He started his career as an engineer with Hatch, later moving to Enercon, where he led teams in the construction of more than $150M in renewable energy projects, and in the engineering design and planning of $1.0B more. Outside of BDC, he is a lecturer at the University of Toronto in entrepreneurial finance and is a mentor at Techstars, the Hatchery and the Founder Institute.
Mark holds an MBA from the University of Oxford, a Masters of Engineering from the University of Waterloo, and a Bachelor of Engineering from Ryerson University. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
