CIX (Canadian Innovation Exchange) Brings Startup World Cup to Canada
Toronto, September 29, 2017 - Startup World Cup is partnering with CIX to host its first ever Canadian regional competition. This regional competition will be held on October 17th and 18th, 2017 as a part of the annual CIX event in Toronto at the Hilton Hotel.
Startup World Cup is a global conference and competition with the goal of bridging startup ecosystems worldwide. There will be 30 regional events across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, leading up to the Grand Finale in US Silicon Valley. This is the first ever event of its type, organized by Fenox Venture Capital, a Silicon Valley-based multinational VC firm.
In its 10th year, CIX is Canada’s largest innovation investment conference, bringing together tech entrepreneurs and capital providers with a mandate to foster business collaborations through both structured and informal networking opportunities, and to provide inspiring and informative high-level keynotes and panel discussions. At CIX, connections are made and deals get done.
On Sept 7, CIX announced the 20 innovative Canadian technology companies that have been inducted into the annual CIX Top 20 program http://cixsummit.com/2017/cixtop20/ . These game-changing companies on the rise are chosen by a selection committee made up of technology industry experts and investors from across the country.
As part of the Startup World Cup program, there will be secret judges at CIX who will attend the CIX Top 20 presentations and select one finalist, who will be awarded the Startup World Cup for Canada on the afternoon of Oct 18 at CIX. The winner will represent Canada at the Startup World Cup Grand Finale and will compete alongside 29 other startups from all over the world for a chance to win a US $1,000,000 prize in investment.
Startup World Cup Grand Finale will feature keynotes, panels, and a pitch competition among regional champions from all around the world. It will be held on May 11th, 2018 at San Francisco Marriott Marquis. Startup World Cup 2017 featured top industry experts, including Steve Wozniak (Co-Founder of Apple), Alexis Ohanian (Co-Founder of Reddit), Guy Kawasaki (Former Chief Evangelist of Apple and distinguished author), and Daymond John (Star of ABC’s Shark Tank & CEO of FUBU).
Through this global event, CIX Summit will be giving the Canadian startups exposure and access to some of the top VCs and tech entrepreneurs in the world, creating funding and partnership opportunities.

Canada’s Most Innovative Technology Companies
Today, CIX (Canadian Innovation Exchange) announced the 2017 roster of innovative Canadian technology companies that have been inducted into the annual CIX Top 20 program. Companies are chosen by a selection committee made up of technology experts and investors from across the country.
Hundreds of profiles were submitted this year from all regions of Canada. Companies were chosen based on a number of key factors including product/service offering, depth of management, market opportunity, and business model.
The 2017 CIX Top 20 are (in alphabetical order):

The CEO of each CIX Top 20 company will present at CIX 2017 on Oct 17-18 and share their story and unique innovation to a crowd of over 750 investors and peers in the North American technology ecosystem. Alongside these showcases will be interactive sessions led by Canada’s top tech business leaders, investors, and entrepreneurs.

Bozoma Saint John is the Chief Brand Officer at Uber, where she is tasked with telling the stories of our millions of riders and driver partners across 600+ cities.
Over the course of her career, Bozoma “Boz” Saint John has earned a formidable reputation as a trailblazing marketing and advertising executive. Most recently, Boz was the Head of Global Consumer Marketing for Apple Music and iTunes. In the role, she spearheaded campaigns geared towards growing consumer brand recognition, loyalty and equity around the world. Boz stole the show at Apple’s keynote World Wide Developers Conference when she introduced the new interface for Apple Music. Following the presentation, Buzzfeed called her the "coolest person to ever go on stage at an Apple event.”
Before Apple, Boz was head of the Music and Entertainment Marketing Group at Pepsi-Cola North America, where she drove breakthrough consumer engagement plans for brands across the soda giant’s beverages portfolio by engaging tastemaker-consumers. Prior to Pepsi, Boz served as VP of Marketing for Ashley Stewart, a women’s fashion brand, as well as managed accounts at advertising agencies Arnold Worldwide and Spike Lee's SpikeDDB.
Boz was born in Middletown, CT, but spent her early childhood in Nairobi Kenya, Washington DC, and Accra Ghana, before immigrating to Colorado Springs CO when she was 12 years old. She received her Bachelor’s degree in English and African American Studies from Wesleyan University (at which she currently sits on the President’s Advisory Council). ?

Michael Hyatt is and entrepreneur and investor. Michael is the Co-founder of BlueCat. He is a weekly business commentator on CBC News Network and one of the new “Dragons” on CBC’s Next Gen Den – Dragon’s Den. Michael is a Founding Partner at the Rotman School of Management Creative Destruction Lab, and on the CEO Board of Advisors at Georgian Partners. Michelle Scarborough is Managing Director, Strategic Investments and Women in Tech. In this position, she leads the origination and execution of strategic initiatives to fill current and future financing gaps in the Canadian ecosystem. She is also responsible for BDC’s $70M investment to bring capital to high-growth tech companies with women in the lead.
Michelle has over 20 years of experience as an entrepreneurs and investor across various industries and sectors. Before joining BDC, she was Senior Vice President at Kensington Capital Partners Limited, where she was responsible for the growth and management of its fund of funds and direct investment activity in Western Canada including venture capital, private equity, infrastructure and energy technology investments. Previously, serving as Managing Director of the Invest Ottawa Regional Innovation Centre, she founded one of the first technology accelerators in Ontario, a model that was replicated in 13 accelerators across the province. She also structured and launched the $250M Ontario Emerging Technology Fund, and was a co-founder and Managing Partner of Fronterra Ventures—an oil and gas technology venture fund. She has served as CEO of Smart Seed Ventures Management Inc., and of Scarborough Associates Management, and she was Interim CEO of Solflex. Michelle has been a founder or co-founder of various private and public companies including Roll Up Capital Corp., Rodeo Capital Corp III, Metropolitan Energy Corp., and Bonita Capital Inc.
Ms. Scarborough is a director of the Canadian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association and is past chair of the National Angel Capital Organization. She is a founder of the Women’s Angel Network in Canada.
